Butter Crags

The Brief

Butter Crags in Grasmere is an elevated home with a large natural garden reaching up the hillside through native woodland.

The garden is very steep in places, and the owners have asked Lakeland Gardens to build some slightly more formal paths and steps to aid access to some of the more slippery parts of the garden.

A beck runs from high on the hill in a series of waterfalls at intervals through the garden, with stone bridges crossing the beck at points. When it rains the surrounding ground can become waterlogged and get very muddy and slippery.

Much of the woodland was populated with large ponticums that had taken over, so it was difficult to move through the space and to see the rest of the woodland.

The Solution

In order to answer the customer’s requirements, we planned to remove a large proportion of the rhododendrons and reduce others. We also needed to clear the existing pathways, and create some new ones.

One of the primary requests was to be able to safely navigate the edges of the beck, bringing it into the garden and restoring it as a prominent feature. In order to do this we needed to build a naturalistic stepped stone pathway alongside the beck, allowing for safe walking up and down the slope. This new stone pathway would complete the loop and make the most of both sides of the beck, as well as the inclusion of the rest of the garden up into the woodland above the house.

The Outcome

Wait and see!

Work has already begun on this project, but the full impact of the work is yet to be seen. Keep your eyes peeled for updates as the project is completed.
