Holiday Cottage Garden Maintenance

The Lake District is a well known holiday destination for people from all over the world. Holiday cottages abound and are frequented by a large proportion of the vast numbers of visitors to the area every year.

Visitors and guests form their first (and often lasting) impression of the quality of your holiday home from the exterior of the building and the grounds in which it is set. An attractive, clean and well maintained appearance is a reassuring indicator of commitment to high standards within.

It is therefore of paramount importance to pay close attention to the appearance of the garden and space around the property throughout the seasons. Many owners of holiday cottages are either non-resident in the Lakes, or find that their busy lives make it impossible to spend the necessary time looking after the garden.

Low maintenance planting and regular garden maintenance can help to keep the outdoor space looking at its best. Things to consider might include:

  • weeding
  • watering through periods of hot, dry weather (yes, we do have those in the Lake District)
  • regular dead-heading to prolong flowering
  • keeping paths and decking free of moss
  • regular lawn mowing and edging
  • more seasonal tasks such as hedge trimming and cutting back

A beautiful, well maintained garden can form as much a part of the holiday cottage as the interior space, so it is really important to look after it as thoroughly as you take care of the cleaning and the fresh linen.
